The opening day in the ‘A’ zone final of the Sanmar-TNTA league club tennis championship between Madras Cricket Club (MCC) and Gandhi Nagar Club at MCC courts here on Tuesday, ended with the teams sharing the honours.
First, Vijay Sundar Prashanth defeated Elwin Antony 6-4, 6-2 to give Gandhi Nagar a 1-0 lead.
On the adjacent court, nearly 30 minutes later, MCC’s Ramkumar Ramanathan overcame a stiff challenge from Vijay Kannan before winning 7-5, 6-4.
Three men’s doubles matches have been scheduled for Wednesday — the final day.
The results: ‘A’ zone (final): MCC vs Gandhi Nagar 1-1 (Ramkumar Ramanathan bt Vijay Kannan 7-5, 6-4; Elwin Antony lost to Vijay Sundar Prashanth 6-4, 6-2).

‘D’ zone (final): Cosmopolitan ‘B’ bt Nungambakkam TC ‘M’ 2-1 (Samyukth Balaji & Salman bt Vignesh & S. Harieshwar 6-2, 6-2; Senthil Kumaran & Palanisamy Raja bt Govindraj & Srikanth 6-3, 6-4; Viral H. Shah & Ravindran lost to Sridhar & Thomas Premkumar 0-6, 0-6).
Veteran’s (60+) doubles: Second semifinal: Besant Nagar bt Egmore TC ‘B’ 1-0 (C. H. Naidu & T. N. Prasad bt Rajendran & T.V. Subramanyam 6-3, 6-3).
Second-seeded Murtaza Lohani beat Venkateswaran 8-1 to advance to the second round of the SSN National Open championships at the SSN Courts on Tuesday.
Earlier, tennis legend and the former Davis Cup captain Ramanathan Krishnan inaugurated the tournament.

Prithvi bags a double
S. Prithvi of SRM University won two gold medals for men’s singles and doubles in the tennis event of the National Games for the deaf at Aurangabad.
Prithvi defeated Shafy Qudari of Maharashtra in the singles final. Then partnering A. Siddarth, he won the doubles title.

Semifinals: bt Prasanth (Kar) 6-1.
