The first match of the local football season — the Calcutta Football League premier division encounter between defending champion East Bengal and Kalighat Milan Sangha — was abandoned owing to poor light on Sunday. East Bengal led 4-1 before the match was called off by the referee with 17 minutes of action still remaining.

The match was scheduled for a late 4 p.m. start and with the light fading fast in the overcast conditions the teams appealed for suspension of play.

“The players of both the sides feared injury and requested the referee to stop play,” said the match commissioner Pradip Nag.

The fate of the match will be decided by the tournament committee of the organiser — India Football Association — which will meet soon to discuss the issue. — Principal Correspondent
