Defending champion and second seed Mary Ann Gomes of Bengal defeated top seeded Tania Sachdev of Air India with an emphatic show in the third round of the UBI 40th National women's premier chess here on Wednesday.

Mary Ann, who played two draws previously, picked up her first win to net two points from three rounds and shared the second spot with Padmini Rout (Odisha), B. Pratyusha (Andhra Pradesh) and Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB).

Former champion Swathi Ghate of LIC won her second game in three matches to aggregate 2.5 points and enjoyed the sole lead at the end of the day.

Good preparation

Mary Ann, playing with black, showed good preparation by opting for the less-preferred Ragozin variation in the queen’s gambit declined.

This move caught Tania by surprise and she ran into a very passive position by the 15th move.

Mary Ann won a pawn on the 32nd move after her rook ran through Tania’s second rank. Unable to muster any counter play for her material deficit, Tania resigned four moves later.

While Mary Ann bettered her overnight position with the win, Swathi became the lone leader with a methodical win over young Michelle Catherina of Tamil Nadu.

WGM Padmini Rout of Odisha was the other notable winner of the day. The former under-14 World champion displayed her attacking prowess and broke through the kingside of her opponent, Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa), with black in a Grunfeld defence.

Padmini obtained two connected passed pawns in the centre after which her opponent resigned.
