Chennai girls M. Mahalakshmi and R. Vaishali won golds at the World youth chess championship in Slovenia on Monday.

While Mahalakshmi, a former under-12 World bronze medallist, lifted the under-4 girls’ title, her citymate Vaishali walked away with the under-12 girls’ honours. India also won the bronze medals in both the age groups, through G.K. Monnisha (under-14) and Savant Riya (under-12).

Silver for Aravindh, Girish

Meanwhile, Madurai’s Aravindh Chithambaram (under-14 open) and Mysore’s Girish A. Koushik (under-16 open) won silver medals.

Arvindh was tied with American Troff Kayden at the end of the 11-round event but the latter, who had a better tiebreak score, took the gold while the Indian got the silver.
