Maharaja Agrasen College (MAC) scraped through to the quarterfinals of the 25th Zakir Husain memorial football tournament after defeating College of Vocational Studies (CVS) 3-2 on penalties at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Tuesday.
MAC will next play Zakir Husain Delhi College on Saturday for a spot in the last four. Interestingly, it could have avoided the drama of a shoot-out if its defenders had held fort for seven minutes more than they did.
John had given MAC the lead on the half-hour mark after bursting from the right and firing a low shot past the goal-keeper. It seemed the goal would be enough to ensure MAC’s victory, but CVS equalised in the 63rd minute when Akhil Vishnu Nair held off the last defender to slide the ball home.
The contest went to the lottery of penalties and both teams missed two out of their first four kicks to be level at 2-2 before the final efforts. CVS missed again and Samarth took advantage of this to seal victory.
The results: Maharaja Agrasen College 1 (John 30) bt College of Vocational Studies 1 (Vishnu Nair 63). MAC won 3-2 on penalties; Ram Lal Anand College 1 (Shivam 69-pen) bt Shivaji College 0; Zakir Husain College Old Boys 2 (Kulbhushan 3, 15) bt St. Stephen’s College 2 (John 40, Enoch 55). ZHC won 3-1 on penalties.
