Host Loyola ‘Whites’ clinched the Rev. Fr. L.D. Murphy Memorial South India inter-collegiate football tournament title here on Friday, with a 1-0 win over Madras Christian College.

Loyola had the lion’s share of ball possession. Though the defending champion was patchy, it was Loyola that provided interesting touches in the first half.

A wonderful set-piece resulted in the first goal in the 21{+s}{+t}minute. Sengottaiyan back-passed to Dinesh and the latter unleashed a curling cross from the left that found X. Sathesh, whose header was bang on target. Thereafter, Loyola kept MCC busy with regular raids especially on the left flank.

After a disappointing first half, MCC regrouped itself somewhat well. There were quite a few counter-attacks that gave jitters to the Loyola camp, but MCC failed miserably as a team.

Loyola ‘Yellows’ defeated St. Joseph’s (Tiruchi) 1-0 to bag the third place. Prashanth Kumar (41st minute) scored the winner.

Loyola collected Rs. 5,000 while MCC got Rs. 3,000. Rev. Fr. K. Amal, Rector, Loyola, gave away the prizes.
