Tuticorin: International Master R.R. Laxman of Chennai lifted the SPIC Trophy defeating Vinoth Kumar of Chennai in the final and 10th round of the 20th SPIC Fide-rated chess tournament here on Saturday.

He scored nine points and bagged a cash prize of Rs. 15,000. M. Kunal of Neyveli, the other overnight joint leader, succumbed to A. Nimmy George of Kerala in a thrilling encounter.

Irrespective of the loss, he managed to clinch the runner-up spot, with eight points by virtue of his progressive score over Nimmy of Kerala (8 pts) and P. Maheswaran of SRM Arts College, Chennai (8 pts), who dealt another blow to the top-seeded IM D.P. Singh of Southern Railway, Chennai. Maheswaran was placed third and Nimmy fourth.

In the non-medallist section, 11-year-old V.S. Sakthivel Pandian of Sivakasi Lions Matriculation School, Sivakasi won the title comfortably, with eight points, outwitting T. Vishnu Priya of Nagercoil. S. Madhavan of Chennai and S. Aravind Kumar of Namakal finished second and third respectively.

K.S. Gopalakrishnan, General Manager, SPIC Ltd., presided over and V.V.S. Rama Rao, General Manager, Heavy Water Plant, Tuticorin, gave away the prizes.

Six-wicket haul

A haul of six wickets by Karthikeyan helped Government HSS (Umarikkadu) defeat Government HSS (Kulathur) by nine wickets in the TDCA inter-school cricket tournament at Tuticorin on Saturday.

The scores: Govt. HSS (Kulathur) 14 in 6 overs (Karthikeyan six for 4) lost to Govt. HSS (Umarikkadu) 15 for one in five balls; St. Antony’s School (Palayakayal) 119 in 24 overs (Muthuselvan four for 20, P. John three for 12) lost to Hindu HSS (Arumuganeri) 120 for three in 16.5 overs.

St. Joseph’s wins

St. Joseph’s Engineering College (Chennai) beat Tagore Engineering College (Chennai) 29-14, 29-9 to win the title in the final of the Anna University inter-zone ball badminton tournament at ACCET ground, Karaikudi on Saturday.

Yogadev nets hat-trick

A hat-trick by Yogadev helped Vikram College of Engineering defeat Nehru Football Club 3-0 in the Madurai District Football Association ‘A’ division league for Hi-Tech Arai Trophy at Madurai on Saturday.

In another match, four goals by Saravanarajan and one each by Rajan, Srinivasan and Satheesh helped Acme Sports Club thrash Usilai FC 7-2. For Usilai, Subas and Manikandan scored.

St. Joseph’s College (Tiruchi), with a better goal difference at the end of the league stage, retained the title in the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate football tournament at Tiruchi on Saturday.

Jamal Mohammed College (Tiruchi) finished second, while H.H. Rajah’s College (Pudukottai) secured the third spot.

In the last of the league matches, St. Joseph’s and Jamal Mohammed played out a goalless draw. With both the teams levelled at two wins, St. Joseph’s, having scored nine goals in the earlier two matches as compared Jamal’s five, was declared the winner.
