Great Britain’s Jon Lancaster will start from pole position after emerging on top in both the qualifying races as the third and the final round of the MRF Challenge 2012 began at the MMRT in Sriperumbudur here on Friday.

Compatriot and leader Jordan King was slightly off pace in the first round — the timings of which are applicable for Saturday’s races — finishing fourth. However, he came back strongly in the second to clock the second best time which will ensure that he lines up in the front row on Sunday.

United States’ Conor Daly, who is just five points behind leader King, saw his chances nosedive as he dropped to 13th in the first round and eighth in the second.

Reigning Formula 2 champion Luciano Bacheta, third in both the qualifying rounds, will look to make the third position in the overall standings and possibly challenge Daly — who is ahead by 28 points — for the second position.

India’s Parthiva Sureshwaran will start ninth on the grid and Parth Ghorpade 12th. Saturday’s action will see two races being held —the first in the normal and the second in the reverse grid format.

Qualifying times (Top three): Round one: 1. Jon Lancaster (GBr), 1:33.675s, 2. Josh Hill (GBr), 1:33.842s, 3. Luciano Bacheta (GBr), 1:33.867s; Round two: 1. Lancaster, 1:33.183s, 2. Jordan King (GBr), 1:33.454s, 3. Bacheta, 1:33.607s.
