HYDERABAD: ONGC has come forward to help promising chess player P. Lakshmi Sahiti by announcing a scholarship for the Asian under-10 girls winner.

According to sources, she will be given a scholarship amount of Rs. 12,000 for the next six months, which should take care of her plans to take part in the Asian championship in Tehran next month.

It is also hinted that the deal might be reviewed based on her performances.

New tennis academy

There is something to cheer for tennis prodigies of the twin cities with Fed Cup team coach Enrico Piperno deciding to join hands with his friend and qualified coach V. Neelakanteswara Rao to set up a full-fledged academy in Iriset Complex.

The academy boasts of four courts right now and two more synthetic courts will be added later.

Piperno will visit the academy for 10 days every month and will work in close coordination with renowned sports scientist Dr. Bhaktiar Choudhary.

"We want to make a small and sincere beginning with our first target being to produce a National champion within the next one year," said Piperno. "Tennis is a very technical game. We intend to impart basic training with a professional touch and exactly for this reason, we have decided to restrict the trainees to the age group of 14 to 16 years," he added.

Easy win for Chittoor

Chittoor blanked Nizamabad 4-0 in the fourth AP sub-junior inter-district women's hockey championship at Veduru Kuppam in Chittoor district, according to information received here.

Earlier, MLA G. Muddu Krishnam Naidu inaugurated the tournament.

The results: Prakash 3 bt Vizianagaram 0; Visakhapatnam 0 drew with Krishna 0; Chittoor 4 bt Nizamabad 0; Kurnool 3 bt Nalgonda 0; Krishna 0 drew with Nellore 0; East Godavari 1 bt Guntur 0.

Geet Sethi lauded

AP State Billiards & Snooker Association president Capt. P.V.K. Mohan congratulated Geet Sethi on winning the World professional billiards title for the fifth time.

"It is a great honour and we sincerely believe that this victory will give the sport further fillip in the country," he said in a congratulatory message. He also took the opportunity to remind that Sethi will be actively involved in the setting up of a full-fledged academy in the city.

HHA camp concludes

The annual summer coaching camp for U-16 boys organised by the Hyderabad Hockey Association, concluded at the Begumpet Police Stadium. SAAP VC &MD G. Kamala Vardhana Rao and HHA president Umesh Kumar were the guests of honours at the valedictory function.

Olympian N. Mukesh Kumar, State players Qayoom, E.S. Sanjay Kumar and Gyanchand monitored the camp.
