Government Chawngfianga Middle School, Kolasib, became only the third side ever from Mizoram to lift the Subroto Cup for the boys’ sub-junior (under-14) title as it pipped Betkuchi High School, Kamrup (Assam) 2-1 at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday.
The Assamese team, the first-ever representative from the state in the final, was second best throughout, but the decisive goal did not arrive until three minutes from the end. The first half of the 50-minute match passed without any clear-cut chances being created.
But, three minutes into the second period, the Mizoram side went ahead as Lalthansanga burst from the right to shoot from the edge of the six-yard box. His shot went in off the far post.
But, eight minutes later, parity was drawn against the run of play when Lallawmawma passed the ball past his own onrushing goalkeeper to gift Betkuchi a goal.
The match seemed headed towards extra-time but Lallawmsanga sealed victory in the 47th minute, as he tapped home the rebound after Vanlalhruaitluanga’s free-kick from the left was headed on to the crossbar by tournament top-scorer Lalawmpuia.
The Mizoram boys earned the winner’s cheque of Rs.2 lakh while Betkuchi was richer by a lakh rupees.
