BRISTOL: Chris Tremlett, Stuart Broad and Kevin Pietersen undermined New Zealand’s batsmen on a bouncy pitch at the County Ground so that it required bold tail-end batting to bring a total of 182 and victory. Not even a long, patient innings from skipper Paul Collingwood could guide England home.

Half way through the England chase it seemed the teenager Tim Southee, who took three wickets for none in eight swift balls, had won the match. It was a remarkable turnaround by the Kiwis who had been 49 for five.

Brendon McCullum struck 16 in four balls of the third over before he was caught overhead at mid-off by Pietersen, leaping and at full stretch.

Eventful over

McCullum had blasted a square cut for four, pulled a six 20 metres out of the ground towards central Bristol, hit a legside four and cantered a two when the final ball of Anderson’ over offered a long half volley outside the off stump.

He must have thought great another four as the ball left his bat and as Pietersen leapt.

The rest of the England bowling success belonged to 22-year-old Broad and Tremlett. Broad bowled his ten overs without a break to finish with 10-4-14-2, with wickets of Jamie How and Ross Taylor.

Tremlett’s first spell of 6-1-9-1 so that after 21 overs the Kiwis were 49 for five, 17 of those to McCullum.

Defiant knock

Grant Elliott’s 56 was spread across 102 balls but Kyle Mills hit five fours and two sixes in a 40-ball 47 that brought 14 runs off the final over.

When Luke Wright was caught at slip in the first over.

Pietersen went in the fifth over at 19, Ravi Bopara spent 14 balls getting off the mark and ten overs brought only 27 compared with 34 by New Zealand.

Bopara’s attack was an illusion as Ian Bell was caught and Southee whipped out Bopara, Owais Shah and Tim Ambrose so that four wickets had fallen for two runs in 19 balls.

Collingwood finished with top score after he and Graeme Swann hit fifty for the seventh wicket.

But there was no one with the strength to complete the job.
