Left-hander Tom Latham hit an unbeaten 37 as New Zealand slowly moved to 62 for one at lunch off 32 overs in the first Test against the West Indies here on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Latham, playing only his second Test, shared an unbroken second wicket stand of 53 with Kane Williamson, who went to the interval unbeaten on 17.

Pacer Jerome Taylor, playing his first Test after a long break, was the only successful home bowler with one for nine.

New Zealand, opting to bat, had an early setback in the ninth over when Peter Fulton (one) edged Taylor through to new West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin.

But Latham and Williamson settled in resolutely to dull the home team’s attack. — AFP
