The BDFA Super Division side KGF Academy (formerly BEML SC) is back on its feet, with the club announcing on Friday that it had signed up 18 players for the 2012-13 season.

The defending champion was at risk of missing the upcoming season entirely — and therefore being relegated to the ‘A’ division — after its roster was devastated by an exodus of top players, led by former coach Raman Vijayan, to the newly-formed South United FC.

The club, however, was brought around by the BDFA, who extended the November 5 deadline for the registration of players. KGF Academy subsequently held trials at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Thursday, whittling down the 92 players who turned out to 25.

The final 18 were chosen after interviews with the team management on Friday; with four players permanently on the rolls, it takes the squad size up to 22.

The new recruits are on six-month contracts (till the end of the season), revealed Murugesh, President of BEML Sports Club.

“We will consider whether to offer an extension or hire fresh players depending on the company’s budget for next year,” he said. “We have a good bunch of new players now. Most of them have arrived from other clubs, and a lot of them have played for Karnataka at the junior level.” The club is yet to appoint a coach, and discussions with candidates are said to be ongoing.
