Veteran Karnataka cricketer Anand P. Katti announced his retirement from first-class cricket here on Thursday. The 38-year-old said an operation he underwent on his knee last year hastened his decision.
“I'm nearing 39 and I don't want to risk injuring my body any further,” he said. Katti played a total of 46 first class matches in a career that lasted 13 years, winning the Ranji Trophy and the Irani Trophy twice with Karnataka.
The left-arm-spinner made his first-class debut for Karnataka in October 1996 and was an integral part of the Ranji-winning teams in the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. After a four year absence from the Karnataka side, Katti shifted base to Assam in 2005 and went on to represent the north-eastern State till the end of the 2008-09 domestic season. Belgaum-born Katti bagged a total of 141 first-class wickets, with the 2008-09 Duleep Trophy semifinal at Mumbai, where he represented East Zone, his last competitive match.
Katti said, however, that he would continue to play league cricket for State Bank of Mysore.
