Former World champion and one of the world’s greatest chess players, Garry Kasparov announced during the 84th FIDE Congress in Tallinn (Estonia) that he would be contesting for the post of president in the 2014 elections to be held in Norway.

Earlier, the current FIDE President Kirstan Ilymzhinov made his intentions clear of seeking another term.

Ilymzhinov has been President of FIDE since 1995 and was re-elected in 2010 when he defeated his rival Anatoly Karpov, winning 95 votes to 55.
