BANGALORE: A. Kashyap overcame a sluggish start, a spate of double faults and some dubious line calls to script a dramatic 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over S.D. Prajwal Dev and claim the boys’ under-14 title in the STEPAK-AITA Talent Series tennis championship at the KSLTA Courts here on Friday.
It was a memorable Christmas for Kashyap, who looked woefully out of depth at the beginning of a contest that lasted close to 100 minutes. He committed no fewer than 10 double faults, but soon made a splendid turnaround, belting forehand winners.
Kashyap remained consistent with his returns against a faltering Prajwal. The first set was a whitewash after the former dropped serve in the fourth game with two double faults. Prajwal stepped up the tempo and cracked his rival’s serve again in the sixth game to wrap up the set.
Kashyap’s woes continued in the second set as he dropped serve in the fifth game — which saw seven deuces — and also struggled with his serve. However, after losing serve, Kashyap stormed back to break Prajwal in the sixth and eighth games to take the set 6-3.
In the decider, Kashyap was the better player as Prajwal lapsed into a series of unforced errors. Kashyap broke his rival in the fifth and seventh games and closed out the tie in style with a clean forehand winner which left Prajwal stranded.
In the two lop-sided girls’ finals, Shloka Kumar bagged the under-14 crown with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Anjali Jaindan of Kerala while N. Ramya of Chennai bagged her fourth under-12 title on the circuit defeating the local girl Shikha N. Singh 6-2, 6-1.
