Joydeep Dutta emerged the champion in the sixth Chess for Youth meet at Town Hall here on Monday.

Joydeep got the better of Sreyan Bhowmick to log with six points while former Asian under-12 boys' champion Diptayan Ghosh and Swayams Mishra of Orissa fought a fierce battle on the top board but had to be content with the joint second place with 5.5 points each as their game ended in a tame draw.

Joydeep received a cash prize of Rs. 20,000 and a glittering trophy. Diptayan Ghosh and Swayams Mishra got Rs. 12,000 each.

Defending champion Bitan Banerjee made short work of second seed Anwesh Upadhyay to take the fourth spot with 5.5 points. Top seed and Asian junior champion, International Master M. Shyam Sundar of Tamil Nadu was relegated to the eighth position with 5 points to his credit.

Sports Minister Madan Mitra, matinee idol Prosenjit Chatterjee and chess grandmaster Surya Sekhar Ganguly gave the prizes. — Special Correspondent
