: Joga Singh and Shivendra Singh scored a brace each in Air India’s emphatic 6-0 win over Bangladesh XI in a Pool A quarterfinal league encounter of the ONGC Nehru hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Monday.

Air India, studded with several international players, was too good for the Dhaka-based side even though it tried different combinations and warmed up for the rest of the event as well as the ensuing Shastri tournament at the same venue.

Air India, which was the joint winner of the Murugappa Cup, runner-up in the National championship and a semifinalist in the Beighton Cup, had a quiet start before opening its account through Joga Singh’s effort from close range.

Later, Shivendra utilised a short pass from Joga to make it 2-0.

Barring a few good initiatives from Sameer Dad, most of the Air India moves were futile due to the lack of coordination upfront.

However, the forward line had enough ammunition to torment the Bangladeshi defenders.

Air India, which rested custodian Adrian D’Souza in the second half to provide some practice to Gurpreet Singh, showed better planning to score four goals after the break. Somanna Pradhan and Shivendra found the target in quick succession, while Joga Singh completed his double with 20 minutes left. V.S. Vinaya converted his side’s seventh penalty corner to make it 6-0.

ONGC posts win

In another match, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) defeated Army XI 3-1. Jagwant Singh, Diwakar Ram and Mandeep Antil scored a goal apiece for the winner.

Chandan Aind deflected in the lone goal for Army, which frittered away some short corners after giving a close fight to ONGC in the first half.
