Jammu and Kashmir defeated Assam by a lone goal and became the first team to qualify for the quarterfinal league stage of the 67th Santosh Trophy National football championship here on Monday.

The consistent Rizwan Sheikh scored the match-winner off a penalty in the 64t{+h}minute in the Cluster ‘C’ game of the qualifying round II and helped Jammu and Kashmir top the group with two wins.

The group had four teams initially but was reduced to three after Andaman and Nicobar pulled out.

Jammu and Kashmir, which had beaten Rajasthan in its league opener, will now head to Kochi and will have host Kerala for company in the quarterfinal round’s Group C.

The other two teams in the group will be decided later.

The result: J & K 1 (Rizwan Sheikh 64-pen) bt Assam 0.
