Ace basketball player Geethu Anna Jose has been selected for the 25th Jimmy George Foundation award for the best sportsperson of Kerala. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 and a plaque, a release from the Jimmy George Foundation said here on Friday.
The award committee headed by Jose George and comprising Robert Bobby George, Joby Joseph, T. Devaprasad and Sebastian George chose the winner.
Geethu had captained India in the Asian Basketball Championship held at Chennai in 2009 and is the first professional basketball player from India. She had played in the Australian League during the 2006-08 season and represented India in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 and Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.
A regular member of the Indian team for the past ten years, she had played nearly 100 matches for the country.
The award will be presented on November 30, the release said. Former winners include Olympian P.T. Usha, Shiny Wilson, Cyril C. Vallor (volleyball), C.V. Pappachan and I.M. Vijayan (football), George Thomas (badminton), K.M. Beenamol and Bobby Aloysius (athletics). — PTI
