Mumbai: The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) will host the Indian Turf Invitation Cup this week-end (March 6 and 7). It will be sponsored by Vandrevala Foundation and Hirco.
The Invitation Cup was first run in 1963 at Mahalaxmi following the decision of the Turf Authorities of India to have a race to decide the champion of champions in the country.
Designed as a championship event over the classic distance of 2,400m, the race was programmed to rotate annually among the five race clubs in India.
Unlike the sweepstake races, the Invitation Cup is a race where participants are nominated by the individual race club. Over the years, the Invitation week-end has grown from a single race to crown the Champion four-year-old in the country into a full fledged festival of racing with races framed over two days to test a whole range of ages and distances like the Sprinters Cup, Stayers Cup and the Super Mile Cup.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, Mr. Firdose Vandrevala, Chairman & Managing Director of Hirco said: “We are extremely pleased to have our brands associated with this historic racing event. The Vandrevala Foundation is leveraging its sponsorship of the Invitation Cup to reach wider audience in Mumbai and promote greater awareness of its Mental Health Initiative-India. The Foundation runs a 24x7 helpline (022-25706000) to aid those in need of counselling. I am sure the Vandrevala Foundation Indian Turf Invitation week-end will be an exciting and memorable one”.
“The Vandrevala Foundation Indian Turf Invitation Cup will set a new benchmark in the illustrious history of this race. Prize money, entertainment, promotion and visibility will be at an unprecedented level. For the first time ever, the entire week-end is sponsored by one group and the total stakesmoney would be around Rs. 3 crores. The RWITC is proud to stage this mega event with all the pomp and splendour that it deserves” said Mr. Vivek Jain, Chairman, RWITC.
