The annual Coffee Day Rally, the third round of the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC), will begin in Chikmagalur on November 24.
The rally covers a distance of 380km, and will see prominent racers like Rahul Kanthraj, Amitrajith Ghosh and last year’s winner Lohit Urs in action.
Speaking at a press conference here, R. Bharath Raj, vice-president of the national motorsport body FMSCI, stated the rally plays a vital role in taking motorsport to smaller centers.
“The Coffee Day Rally is the best example we give when we speak about taking motorsport to small towns in the country,” he said.
“It has been hard to find sponsors for rallying in general, and we are trying our best to rope in some support.”
Motor Sports Club of Chikmagalur (MSCC) vice-president K. Farooq Ahmed said the event was a favourite among drivers, adding that it had been officially recognised by the FMSCI as the best rally of the year in 2007 (joint winner with Nashik), 2009 and 2011. — Sports Reporter
