Indians bag 14 of the 16 gold medals on offer H. K. Balwal wards off a strong challenge from Aziz Mohamed
NEW DELHI: Indian pugilists made it almost a clean sweep, bagging 14 of the 16 gold medals on offer, on the penultimate day of the 10th YMCA international boxing championship here on Thursday. With a vociferous support base, the home boxers exploited the conditions to a good effect. The Indians featured in all the 16 finals on the day, losing only to Kazakhstan that nevertheless has a rich history in boxing. Turkmenistan, which came with the biggest contingent among the visiting teams, settled for silver and bronze medals.
Flyweight H. K. Balwal warded off a strong challenge from Aziz Mohamed of Malaysia with his steady scoring. He guarded his face well with his right and used the left hand to strike telling blows before winning 26-18, in the 51kg category.
Services boxer Paramjit Singh was in a hurry, but Bhutanese Lobzing stretched the Indian till the third round before he was outscored in the 48kg final. Paramjit's left-right combination saw him pin his opponent down in the first round, but Lobzing recovered in the second to extend the bout into the third before the referee stopped the contest.
In the final bout of the day, Vikash Malik outclassed Kazraj Salah of Iraq. The contest was stopped in the second round. Malik had gained a 24-6 lead and Salah had taken too much of a beating which prompted the referee to intervene.
In the junior section, Isa Sadykov of Kazakhstan and Kulvindera fought a thrilling battle in the 57kg category final. With his teammates egging him on, Kulvindera held on to a slender lead, but Sadykov was always on the vigil. Kulvindera had a 15-13 lead midway through, but Sadykov levelled it 17-17 before losing his footing. The Kazakh fell twice, took the ring's support, but was good enough to land punches when it mattered most to emerge a winner 35-32.
