NEW DELHI: Indian boxers are expected to dominate the XXX Energy Drink Commonwealth boxing championship starting at the Talkatora Stadium here on Friday.
Some strong countries have decided to give the championship a miss. Australia has opted out due to the clash of dates with its domestic competitions, while Canada has never shown interest. Pakistan has also decided against sending its pugilists for the event. However, Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) Secretary-General Col. P.K. Muralidharan Raja said that there were no security issues.
“Around 100 boxers from 14 countries will be seen action,” Col. Raja said.
The biggest challenger for India is likely to be England. However, Chief Coach G.S. Sandhu did not want to ignore boxers from other teams. “There are some good boxers in other countries as well. For example, Bruno Julie of Mauritius is an Olympic bronze medallist. Kenya also has a few good boxers. So, one cannot take things for granted,” he said. The bouts will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Doordarshan will show live telecast of the bouts.
