ENSCHEDE (the Netherlands): Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar each scored on Saturday to give the Netherlands a 3-0 win over Japan in an international friendly football match.
Nigel de Jong and Eljero Elia combined to set up a well-positioned Van Persie, who controlled the ball inside the area and stroked in a powerful shot past goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi in the 69th minute. Sneijder added a goal five minutes later, collecting Demy de Zeeuw’s pass before beating Kawaguchi with a long-range shot.
Huntelaar made it 3-0, converting Elia’s cross in the 86th.
Both Netherlands and Japan have already picked up qualifying berths for the World Cup in South Africa.
Sneijder could miss the Netherlands’ final group game against Scotland on Wednesday after sustaining a knee injury.
Japan takes on Ghana in another international friendly on Wednesday.
Japan made a strong start with Shunsuke Nakamura, Keiji Tamada and Shinji Okazaki each getting scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes.
The Netherlands, however, struggled to create any meaningful chances in the first half.— AP
