BANGALORE: Hockey, the game that is recognised as the National sport, is crying foul. The game that brought eight gold medals to the country in Olympics has touched a new cross-fire.
With Indian Olympic glory laid bare in recent times, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)’s move to set up a unified Hockey India body has evoked a strong reaction. The Indian women’s team chief coach, M.K. Kaushik, while lauding the merger, questioned the plausibility of the whole issue. “How can a joint body be formed without considering the chief stakeholders?” Kaushik asked.
K. Krishnamurthy, Secretary, KSHA, which for all practical reasons was the major State unit for the functioning of the IHF all these past years, said: “There is no validity or acceptability. It’s very absurd and cannot be accepted. Coming from a premier institution like the IOA this is ridiculous and unthinkable”. — Special Correspondent
