Unheralded Sumit Grover sprang the biggest surprise in the third round when he shocked Russian Grandmaster Avigdor Bykhovsky in the ninth Parsvnath International Open chess tournament at the Ludlow Castle Sports Complex here on Sunday.
After two days of accelerated pairings involving the top 80 players, normal pairings were resorted to and that left several strong players facing rivals with modest ratings on this day.
In all, 34 players shared the lead with three points each.
Though most results came on expected lines, Jammu and Kashmir's Sumit Grover turned the tables on his fancied rival, rated 384 points above at 2428.
Grover needed 30 moves in Volga Gambit to clinch the issue.
