THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Col. Goda Varma Raja, the founder president of the Kerala Sports Council (KSC), was remembered on his 36th death anniversary at a solemn function here on Monday.

Delivering the Remberance Day address, veteran sports administrator R. Ramakrishnan Nair highlighted the invaluable contributions made by Goda Varma Raja as founder president of the KSC.

Revealing the circumstances under which Raja chose to gave up the presidentship of the All India Tennis Association, by magnanimously allowing a member of the rival faction to cast the vote in the crucial elections, Mr. Nair said this prompted the late M.A. Chidamabram to come up with the famous quote on Raja: "A prince among sportsmen and a sportsman among princes."

The KSC vice-president, K. Thankappan, who presided, said the present Government was pursuing the ideals promoted by Goda Varma Raja and hoped that these would prove to be a success in the long run.

Recalling several instances on how Goda Varma Raja stood for the benefit of sportsmen during his time, Mr. Thankappan said the present generation had a lot to work from the selfless service of Goda Varma Raja.

The KSC secretary, G.Kishore welcomed the packed gathering at the KSC auditorium and C. Ramachandran Nair, senior coach, proposed a vote of thanks.
