Defending champion Gireman Ja of Coimbatore finished on top with seven points at the end of the ninth round to win the State junior chess championship, organised jointly by Sree Sowdambika College of Engineering and Virudhunagar District Chess Association (VDCA), here on Wednesday.
The top two seeds, P. Lokesh and Nr. Vignesh, both from Chennai, also finished with seven points each but Vignesh lost out to Ja in the Buchholz tie-breaker score.
In the women’s section, State under-25 champion P. Bala Kannamma of Chennai continued her dream run to finish on top with seven points. National schools under-15 champion V. Varshini and former State under-15 champion M. Sandya scored 6.5 points each to finish second and third respectively.
