KOLKATA: The National football team players, under the banner of Football Players Association of India (FPAI), have protested the suspension of the two of their colleagues from Dempo SC — Sameer Naik and Mahesh Gawli — by the All India Football Federation.

The news put up on the website of FPAI, where the National team captain Baichung Bhutia is the president, says the National team players have written a letter in this regard requesting the AIFF president, Praful Patel to look into the matter.

The letter alleges that the AIFF has ignored “the root issues with Clubs and simply made easy targets of the players.” It further contended that both players were keen and committed to join the National Camp at Goa but were denied permission by their Club.

“The National team players expressed shock and distress at the disgraceful and unjustified decision against both these senior players who have each served the country with utmost sincerity and commitment for over a decade," the FPAI release added. — Principal Correspondent
