Vasco SC of Goa scored twice in the second half to erase a goal deficit and overcome a strong Langsning FC of Meghalaya 2-1 in the concluding preliminary leg Group III match of the second division I-League at Delhi's Ambedkar Stadium on Monday.
The win helped Vasco secure the second spot in the group standings as well as a berth in the final stage.
In another match of the same group, Kolkata's Mohammedan Sporting blanked PIFA Colaba 3-0 to top the table with an unbeaten record. Sporting had six wins and a draw (19 points), while Vasco finished with 14 (four wins, a draw and a loss) to overtake Langsning, which ended up with 13.
United Sikkim FC suffered a 0-3 loss in the final round encounter against Aizwal FC in the Group I league at Silchar to lose its top spot to the latter.
Having already qualified for the final stage with a round to go, United Sikkim rested a majority of its key players.
Needing a win to survive, Aizwal picked up full points to tally 13 points with four wins, a draw and a loss. Though it tied on points with United Sikkim, it finished on top, thanks to a better record. Ar-Hima FC of Meghalaya (11) saw its final stage hopes extinguished.
Wahingdoh makes it
Royal Wahingdoh thrashed Mumbai's Kenkre FC 3-1 in a Group II league match at Cuttack to become the only team from Meghalaya to progress to the final stage.
Wahingdoh, which remained unbeaten and topped the group, had 17 points with five wins and two draws.
Kalighat MS of Kolkata beat local side Samaleshwari SC 4-2 to conclude its group campaign with 16 points from seven matches and reached the second spot.
Sesa FA of Goa (14 from six) is still in the hunt in this group.
