Chennai: The fifth and penultimate round of the JK Tyre National racing championships gets underway this weekend at the Irungattukottai Motor Race Track.

The qualifying sessions and one race in each category will take place on Saturday and the remaining races on Sunday.

The Formula Rolon category sees the return to action of Speed NK Racing’s Ashwin Sundar, who had missed the last round due to international commitments.

Ashwin’s absence might have seen independent racer Saran Vikram usurp his lead, but the margins at the top are tight — Saran has 35 points after four rounds, pursued closely by Team Red Rooster’s Gaurav Dalal on 34 and Ashwin on 32.

TVS Girling’s Sudarshana Rao leads the Formula Swift category with 56 points from four rounds.

He is followed by three drivers from Wallace Sports — Prithveen Rajan (47), Gokul Krishna (36) and Goutham Parekh (33).
