Modern Senior Secondary School will be organising the third FIDE-rating chess tournament at the school premises from August 2-7.

Prominent among the players will be International Master K. Priyadharshan of Madurai, FIDE Master V.A.V. Rajesh of Chennai, Asian under-14 champion Srija Seshadri of Neyveli, and World under-14 bronze medal winner J. Saranya of Chennai. P. Lokesh of Chennai will defend his title.

The event has attracted a long list of champions which include National under-13 girls champion G.K. Monnisha, National under-11 champion Aravind Chithambaram.

A FIDE-rating tournament for school students was new in 2008 and this theme is continuing for the third year with a prize fund of Rs.1 lakh.

“We had 220 entries in the first year, 250 in the second year and now we have received 275 so far and the number could go much higher when round one starts,” said K. Mohana, principal of the school. The event will be inaugurated by Woman Grand Master S. Vijayalakshmi. — Arvind Aaron
