TORONTO: Roger Federer’s troubled season continued when he followed his crushing loss in the Wimbledon final with a shock 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 defeat against Frenchman Gilles Simon in the second round of the Toronto Masters here on Wednesday.

“The hard court season just started so it is not the end of the world but I wish I could have started better,” Federer said.

“I have to regroup and look forward. The bigger picture is the Olympic Games and the U.S. Open and those are the places I really want to win.”

In the doubles event, Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas entered the quarterfinals after their opponents Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick of the United States pulled out of their second round match due to a knee injury to the former.
