KOLKATA: In all 32 college teams from different universities of the state will participate in the 115-year-old Elliot Shield which has been revamped with the support of Coca Cola.
Having so far been pushed to a corner of the domestic calendar after it was revived few years ago, the tournament got a fresh lease of life finding the new patron, who has promised a long-term support.
The tournament, which will see the highest participation this year, will divide the teams in four groups. Each group will have knock-out rounds and the group champions will play the semifinals to decide the winner.
The semifinals come up on January 24 and 25 while the final will be played on January 28.
The winner will get a cash award of Rs. 75,000 and the runner-up Rs. 50,000.
There will be individual prizes in every match.
Kolkata sole venue
Kolkata will be the sole venue in the country to host the original gold trophy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup football, which will remain on display at the Salt Lake Stadium from January 15 to 17.
The launch was initially planned at Delhi which was later changed by the sponsor Coca-Cola, which is bringing the coveted trophy. — Principal Correspondent
