Girinath and Harika suffer reverses

NEW DELHI: Eesha Karavade moved with a draw of making her final International Master norm after a much-needed victory over Iran's Mehdi Mahdavirad in the eighth and penultimate round of the Dubai Open chess tournament on Sunday.

On a day when Grandmaster norm-aspirants P.D.S. Girinath and D. Harika lost, K. Humpy drew with Georgia's Zurab Sturua and Tejas Barke held Armenian Tigran Petrosian.

Azerbaijan's Gadir Guseinov, the conqueror of Girinath, and Georgia's Levan Pantsulaia share the lead at six points with one round remaining in the $45,000 event.
