Karnataka eased to a six-wicket win over Goa in the opening match of the K.S. Subbiah Pillai Trophy South Zone one-day cricket tournament, here on Thursday.

Contrasting half-centuries from Ganesh Satish (67 not out) and Manish Pandey (53) set up Karnataka's win after Goa had posted an under par score of 180.

Not good enough

A target of 181 was not enough to test the star-studded Karnataka batting line-up. Uthappa quickly got into his groove and played a sweet little knock to grab the initiative, forcing Jakati to bring himself on in the seventh over.

Uthappa holed out off the first ball he faced from the left-arm spinner and Binny fell cheaply soon afterwards to restore sanity to the proceedings. But Pandey and Ganesh Satish flayed the innocuous Goan attack to put on 96 runs for the third wicket to close out an easy win for their side.

At Palakkad, Kerala began with a 69-win over Andhra. Rohan Prem (77), P. Prasanth (45) and Abhishek Hedge (41) made useful contributions as the home side posted a respectable total of 243 for nine. Medium-pacers P. Parmashvaran and Raiphy Vincent Gomez struck early blows from which the visitor never recovered. Andhra folded up for 174 with Sumanth top-scoring with 68.

The scores: Goa 180 in 44.1 overs (R. Keni 48, S.B. Jakati 36, R. Pinto 33, Vinay Kumar four for 35) lost to Karnataka 184 for four in 33.2 overs (G. Satish 67 n.o., M. Pandey 53); Kerala 243 for nine in 50 overs (Rohan Prem 77, P. Prasanth 45, A. Hegde 41, S. Basha three for 31) bt Andhra 174 in 42.1 over (Sumanth 68, P. Parmashvaran four for 30) . — Principal Correspondent
