NEW DELHI: Most Indians won as expected in the opening round of the 13th Balaguer International Open chess tournament at Balaguer, Spain, on Monday.

Out of the 13 Indians on view, two lost to their much higher-rated rivals in the 107-player field.

Abhijeet Gupta and Deep Sengupta, seeded eight and 17, were among the impressive Indian winners.

The results (first round, involving Indians): Devangi Patankar received a walkover from Igor Kurnosov (Rus); Ramon Verdes Nadal (Esp) lost to Abhijeet Gupta; C.P. Aatirah lost to S. Vinay Bhat (US); Deep Sengputa bt Imma Montouliu Daroca (Esp); S.V. Satyapriya lost to Alexander Ipatov (Ukr); Swapnil Dhopade bt Francesc Roig Sanclimens (Esp); Vishnu Prasanna bt Jose Perez Cabas (Esp); M.R. Lalith Babu bt Yeva Kasparova (Blr); Juan Luis Naval Vidiella (Esp) lost to Soumya Swaminathan; Lorenzo Massana Monistrol (Esp) lost to T. Abhay; David Esconda Rodriguez (Ser) lost to Kruttika Nadig; Sergi Sanchez Centelles (Esp) lost to Sai Saikrishnan.
