East Bengal began its I-League campaign on a high, drubbing Shillong Lajong FC 4-0, in a fourth round fixture at Shillong on Wednesday. South Sudanese striker James Moga found the target twice while Nigerian striker Edeh Chidi and midfielder Cavin Lobo scored once each in East Bengal’s impressive win.
The Kolkata side, which missed the first three rounds of the I-League due to its AFC Cup commitments, dominated from the start. Though it had two chances early on in the match, it could not convert them. East Bengal found the breakthrough in the 20th minute when Moga nodded home a free kick from Lalrindika Ralte. The team doubled the lead in the 45th minute when Chidi found the target with a solo effort.
After the breather, Lobo made it 3-0 in the 55th minute, thanks to Moga’s assist. The latter completed East Bengal’s tally in the 63rd minute, making the most of a pass from Chidi.
At Mapusa (Goa), Dempo recovered from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Salgaocar in an exciting tie. Salgaocar took the lead in the 40th minute through Darryl Duffy. But Dempo found the equaliser through Jeje Lalpekhlua in the 81st minute.
