Eagles FC shocked former State inter-club champion Josco FC by a lone goal for its second win in the fourth Wayna Cochin Premier Football League at the FACT Ground, Udyogamandal, on Thursday evening

Sumesh scored the match-winner in the 75{+t}{+h}minute.

“This is our first win over Josco in a tournament,” said Milton Antony, the Eagles coach, who is back with the team after a break.

“We missed two or three open chances, our strikers Jayan and Felix were not on target,” said Josco FC coach M.M. Jacob.

Eagles now has seven points from three games while Josco has five from four matches.

Match tied

Kozhikode and Kasargod tied their North Zone under-16 women’s cricket match at the St. Mary’s College ground in Wayanad on Thursday.

Batting first, Kozhikode scored 72 for seven in the allotted 20 overs and Kasargod made the same score before being bowled out in 16.4 overs.

North Zone: Kozhikode 72 for seven in 20 overs (Anushree three for 13) tied with Kasargod 72 in 16.4 overs (Anju four for 21).

Kannur 98 for six in 20 overs (Akshaya 42) bt Wayanad 70 in 15 overs (Minnumani 34, Akshaya three for 15, M. Ragi three for 21).

Central Zone: Palakkad 157 for two in 20 overs (M. Maya 59) bt Thrissur 38 in 11.4 overs (S. Anjali three for 13).

Idukki 156 for one in 20 overs (Jilu George 81 n.o.) bt Ernakulam 19 in 14 overs (Anju Rajan three for seven).

Kottayam takes lead

Kottayam took the first innings lead against host Alappuzha in the South Zone under-16 inter-district tournament at the SD College ground in Alappuzha on Thursday.

After bundling out Alappuzha for a paltry 86, Kottayam took a 40-run first innings lead at the end of the first day’s play. At Medical College ground, Pathanamthitta was in command against Kollam. Pathanamittha ended the day at 86 for no loss after skittling out Kollam for 114.

The scores: Alappuzha 86 in 48 overs (Aravind S. Raj three for five) vs Kottayam 126 in 58 overs (Jithu Sibi four for 29, Akash C. Pillai three for 25).

Kollam 114 in 57 overs (Rohith Mohan 31, Akhil Anil six for 39) vs Pathanamthitta 86 for no loss in 16 overs (S. Sahil 42 n.o.).

Anand shines

Anand Krishnan struck a fine unbeaten 154 for host Malappuram, which drew its two-day match with Kozhikode in the North Zone (under-16) inter-district cricket championship in Perinthalmanna on Thursday.

Malappuram emerged the champion with 16 points, while Kozhikode finished runner-up with 10.

The scores: Malappuram 138 & 266 for five in 73 overs (Anand Krishnan 154 n.o., Anand Murali 57) drew with Kozhikode 179 in 50 overs (Shamil Ali 40, Rohan Kunnummal 37, Najif four for 39, V.K. Sreerag three for 41).

Quarterfinalists spotted

Holder Ernakulam made short work of Kannur en route to the boys’ quarterfinals of the State youth basketball championship in Mullankolly (Wayanad) on Thursday. Also through to the last eight are Thrissur, Malappuram, Alappuzha, Kannur and Wayanad.

In the girls’ event, reigning champion Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kollam reached the quarterfinals.
