Mysore: The three-day Dussera Games begin at the Chamundi Vihar Sports Complex here on Wednesday.
Over 1600 sportspersons from five divisions — Bangalore City, Bangalore Rural, Belgaum, Gulbarga and host Mysore besides Gen. Thimmaiah Academy of Adventure Sports will be vying for top honours. Bangalore City emerged overall champion in the last edition.
Former Indian hockey captain and Olympian Ashok Kumar will inaugurate the Games at the Chamundi Vihar stadium at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) and the Dasara Sports Committee have taken up the onus of making it an eventful Games.
Events in athletics, football, volleyball, hockey, swimming, gymnastics, kabaddi, handball, kho-kho, table tennis, tennis, badminton, basketball, weightlifting, best-physique and adventure sport like wall climbing will be held.
The half-marathon event for men and women (21.1 km) will be held on the 24th September at 8.30 a.m. and will be flagged off from the Mysore Palace North Gate and attractive cash prize of Rs.30,000 is in the offing for the winner in both the men’s and women’s sections.
The Youth Services and Sports Minister Goolihatti Shekar and District in-charge Minister Shobha Karandlaje will be present during the inaugural function. — Our Correspondent
