BANGALORE: Top-seeded Nikhil Kannan of Maharashtra, a ward of veteran coach Rama Rao, completed a fine double in the boys' under-14 category with an emphatic 6-3, 6-1 victory over the second seed B.R. Nikshep of Karnataka in the final of the KSLTA-AITA Champion Series junior tennis tournament at the KSLTA courts here on Friday.

On Thursday, Nikhil had bagged the doubles title with Nikshep. In fact, Nikshep, who was in line for a triple, saw his hopes dashed in the under-12 final too as he went down to Mysore lad C. Vashist 6-7(8), 6-3, 0-6.

Sapping final

It was the sapping under-12 final, which lasted more than two hours, which put Nikshep under heavy stress in the under-14 title clash held after a brief break of 40 minutes.

The hard-hitting Nikshep, who began brightly by breaking his rival in the second game, came unstuck against a steady Nikhil. The latter chased down every return and was also consistent in his ground strokes. Nikhil, who dictated the pace of the contest, levelled at three and went on to break Nikshep twice (seventh and ninth games) to take the first set.

Nikshep's woes continued in the second set as he struggled with his first serve. He squandered two game points on his serve in the second with two double faults and went on to drop serve. Nikhil raced to a 4-0 lead and even though Nikshep broke back in the fifth game, the former won the next two games easily.

In the under-12 final, Vashist, a steady baseliner, frustrated Nikshep, who lost a close tie-breaker in the first set after trailing 2-4 .Though Nikshep won the second set, he seemed a spent force in the decider with Vashist picking easy winners on his forehand.

Mixed day

In the girls' section, Saranya Nagpal of Andhra Pradesh had a mixed day. She won the under-14 title with an easy 6-3, 6-0 victory over Anjali Jaindhan of Kerala, but A. Shameema of Tamil Nadu stopped her in her tracks in the under-12 final at 7-6(5) ,6-3.

Ramaswamy, joint secretary of KSLTA, gave away the prizes.

The results (all finals):

Boys: Under-14: Nikhil Kannan (Mah) bt B.R. Nikshep (Kar) 6-3, 6-1.

Under-12: C. Vashist (Kar) bt B.R. Nikshep 7-6(8), 3-6, 6-0.
