Australian penalty corner specialist Luke Doerner emerged the hero for Uttar Pradesh Wizards, netting the match-winner in a 1-0 win over Mumbai Magicians in the 11th round of the Hockey India League here on Tuesday. Five points from this verdict boosted Wizards’ tally to 27 points and is now in fourth place.
Mumbai’s first charge out of the defence went in vain as the ball was switched by Wizards to the left for Doerner to slam home. Raghunath was supposed to strike, but another specialist stepped up using the space and time available to sound the boards with a wristy shot.
The home team was in arrears from the second quarter onwards and its hopes of moving closer to a top-four finish and an automatic place in the semifinals went up in smoke. Sandeep Singh’s influence was limited with the forwards able to manage only two corners in four quarters.
Mumbai ended at the bottom in the five-team league with 10 defeats (15 points from 11 games).
Wizards got a stroke after a Thimmiah try hit Joel Carroll, only for Jeroen Hertzberger to scoop onto the post.
