CHENNAI: Combined Districts XI won the C. P. Ramaswamy Iyer Shield by virtue of gaining the first innings lead over City, at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium on Thursday. Districts Captain R. Sathish turned in a stellar all-round performance, picking up five wickets with his gentle right arm medium pace to complement his knock of 158.
Resuming on its overnight score of 289 for eight, Districts was all out for 304 in 122.2 overs. Wicketkeeper K. Varun made 41 before he was caught at slip by S. Badrinath off leftarm spinner R. Ramkumar. Ramkumar finished with three for 58, while leftarm medium pacer R. Naresh had four for 49.
City lost wickets at regular intervals. S. Vidyut held the innings together for City with a knock of 53 (137b, 7x4) but a middle-order collapse saw City reduced to 104 for seven. Sathish bagged the crucial wickets of Badri (11), Sharath (0) and then had Vidyut caught at first slip. Ramkumar put up some resistance but was run out on 48. City finished with 173.
The scores: Combined Districts XI 304 (Sathish 153, E. Suresh 43, K. Varun 41, R. Naresh four for 49) drew with City 173 (S. Vidyut 53, R. Ramkumar 48, R. Sathish five for 51) at MAC. Combined Districts won on first innings lead.
