India's Sahil Deshmukh's lean frame belies his energy levels.

The 14-year-old played a waiting game, ran hard, and displayed supreme fitness in exacting conditions to script a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over compatriot Rakshay Thakkar, the third seed, in the second round of the the Asian closed junior tennis championships at the SDAT-Nungambakkam Stadium here on Tuesday.

In the girls' category, Prarthana Thombare, the third seed, bowed out meekly without much of a fight losing 6-4, 6-3 to Rimpledeep Kaur.

The seeded casualties included Yash Deshpande (12), Rohit Bisht (16) and Kelvin Lam (6) among the boys, and Tarrannum Handa (11) and Shweta Rana (12) among the girls.

Rakshay attacked relentlessly from the baseline to pocket the first set 7-5. In the second set however, Deshmukh counter-punched and waited for Rakshay to commit mistakes. Deshmukh ran away to a 4-1 lead and never looked back.

Towards the end of the second set, Rakshay developed pain in his right thigh that restricted his movements. Before the start of the decider, he took a medical time-out and when he came back, he was not the same player even as Deshmukh got better with his groundstrokes.

Rimpledeep's aggressive instincts paved the way for her victory over Thombare in an hour and 15 minutes. The first set was evenly matched with both players giving their best. But, it was the versatile Rimpledeep's decisive play from the backcourt that took the match.
