CHIDAMBARAM: Delhi University blanked Osmania 2-0 to win the title in the all-India inter-university tennis tournament for women here on Wednesday.
Ankita Bhambri scored an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Poonam Reddy to give Delhi the lead. Ankita's powerful serve troubled her opponent. She used her equally powerful forehand as a weapon to finish off the points quickly and never allowed Poonam to get back into the match. In another encounter, Sanaa Bhambri defeated Sandri Gangothri 6-2, 6-2.
Gangothri found it hard to get her first serve in and her relatively easier second serve made things comfortable for Sanaa. Gangothri showed signs of improvement initially in the second set, but Sanaa continued her attacking game and went on to clinch the set and match.
Earlier in the day, Anna edged out Shivaji 2-0 to finish third. The Anna players fought hard for a win in both the matches. Dr. M. Rathinasabapathi, Registrar, Annamalai University, gave away the prizes in the presence of the Director, Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Dr. K. Vaithianathan.
The results: Final: Delhi bt Osmania 2-0 (Ankita Bhambri bt Poonam Reddy 6-1, 6-0; Sanaa Bhambri bt Sandri Gangothri 6-2, 6-2).
Third place: Anna bt Shivaji 2-0 (Sumana bt Alka Nanda 7-5, 6-2; Grace Hannah bt Aishwarya 7-6, 1-6, 6-0).
