NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy defeated Filipino International Master Richard Bitoon to stay in the joint lead at four points after the fourth round of the second Subic International Open chess tournament at Subic, Olongapo City, in the Philippines, on Wednesday.
Deepan, who won with black pieces, faces fellow leader China’s Xiu Deshun in the next round.
The day proved a mixed one for the Indian GMs when Sandipan Chanda, Parimarjan Negi and Abhijit Kunte won, top seed Surya Shekhar Ganguly drew and World junior champion Abhijeet Gupta lost again.
Former Asian ladies’ champion Tania Sachdev surprised 19th seeded Filipino GM Jayson Gonzales to reach three points.
