NEW DELHI: The Indian Davis Cup team, sans Rohan Bopanna and Mahesh Bhupathi, called on the sports minister, Dr. M.S. Gill on Tuesday.
The minister congratulated the players and goaded them to continue with their ‘tapasya’ in the form of many years of intensive training to reach the top of world tennis.
“I am happy that my decision last year to insist that only those Indian players who hold an Indian passport play for India has led to success”, he claimed.
“Today, in Devvarman, Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri we have a new team India that will carry Indian tennis forward to new glories in the years to come. I am confident that they will show dedication and determination”, he said.
Advice for Devvarman
Appreciating Devvarman for his valiant performance in winning the decisive fourth rubber, the minister said that the 24-year-old had a lot to achieve and should aim to better the performance of Ramanathan Krishnan, who had made the Wimbledon singles semifinals twice before losing to the eventual champions. — Special Correspondent
