Chirag United SC shocked traditional giant Mohun Bagan 1-0 in an eighth round encounter of the I-League football tournament here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.
The decider came late in the second half when Brazilian Joshimar Da Silva capped a solo effort to give United SC full points. Having played a drab goalless draw with JCT Mills in the previous round at the same venue United SC made a strong comeback downing the local giant.
Mohun Bagan, which was looking to get its rhythm back in the tournament after a disastrous start under its new technical director Subhash Bhowmick, conceded its second successive defeat.
United SC made a slow start but gained in strength as its opponent struggled to put together a proper response.
The return of its injured Nigerian striker Edeh Chidi failed to inspire Mohun Bagan's attack. United SC made some forays in the first half but the Bagan defence withstood the assaults to see the scoreline remaining barren at the break.
Mohun Bagan introduced the seasoned Brazilian Jose Barreto in the second session but the player remained off-colour in a withdrawn position as a midfielder.
Joshimar proved the mainstay in the United SC attack in the absence of his injured Nigerian colleague Elijah Junior.
The Brazilian, who had made couple of good efforts in the first session, made no mistake in the 82nd minute.
Receiving a smart assist from midfielder Lalkamal Bhowmick, Joshimar dribbled clear a host of defenders before putting the ball past the Mohun Bagan custodian Shilton Paul.
The win took United SC's tally to 13 points from three wins, four draws and a loss while Mohun Bagan remained on eight points in as many outings.
