Keeping their cool under pressure, Kozhikode’s Providence College girls defeated Kollam’s Centralised Sports Hostel 63-56 and entered their maiden final in the Gelixer Champions Trophy State inter-club basketball championship at the Holiday Club here on Saturday.

Providence, which had upset Kerala Police a couple of days ago, had a 37-29 lead in the third quarter but early in the last quarter, CSH had struck level at 41.

Playmaker M.D. Lisha played a lead role with her fine feeds and smart outside shooting after this as Providence, the faster side, regained the lead and won comfortably. Jeshna James and Benet supported Providence well with some shrewd baskets at the finish.

“We’ve been doing very well in the last few months and this is our first final,” said Providence coach Siji Jose. “This is virtually the Calicut University team.”

Defending champion Central Excise and Customs entered the men’s final with a comfortable 62-41 victory over Thiruvananthapuram’s Mar Baselious Engineering College.

The finals will be played on Sunday evening.
